Aww crap. 😑 <button disabled="" class="c-attachment-insert--linked o-btn--sm">Attachment Deleted</button> Ryan, Even before I saw this full length pic, I thought in your post above that it was from what was known in the 18th century as "Military Overalls." This is what this full length pic is. I've had two pair over the years, but their use was probably exclusive to the Military and from about only as early as the AWI period. I know of no documentation earlier than that. Now if you REALLY want to wear leggins in an HCPC manner, then do as many Native Americans did and SEW them tightly to your legs and not take them off until they wear out. Your ankle injury would not matter in that case. Yeah, I'm not really serious and don't expect you to do that. Sometimes we don't think that back then there were folks who hurt their ankles or feet, or were born with a physical deformity, or etc. and had to somehow make do and modify period clothing when needed. So if you need to put buttons, or hook and eyes (Nock's suggestion) or even some kind of ties on the bottom of your leggins for your ankle, then DO it in a period manner. That's what they would have done. Gus

I have hook & eyes at the bottom of my winter leggings to fit them over high "insulated" moccasins. Makes it easier to change into dry moccasins at bedtime without needing to strip layers.

Yeah… I thought I found an example of gaiters with just a few ankle buttons and when I saw the full pic as military overalls… well I did a facepalm. Ha.
I’d definitely sew them on and let them on. The ever fetching Mrs. RyanAK would not be amused.
Appreciate the last thought. Of course there were fellas with smashed ankles that had to modify their leggings! Why couldn’t I see that?
Though with the nature of my injury, the real PC solution would likely have been a peg leg…
So wool Indian stockings with an open seam a few inches at the bottom and a couple buttons or a tie. Easy enough. I am still interested in all the variations of gaiters out there. I’ve found some good info on military field construction, mostly from AWI period. 2nd Virginia group even has records of drawing their materials from public stores and figured out how many buttons for each pair based on the requisition.
