Well… since I’m working tremendous hours and my flintlock build is stalled at the “barrel leaning in the corner” stage, I decided to search out a ‘placeholder’ arm until which time I can get in the shop and build that gun. Not ideal for my persona necessarily, but certainly plausible. And the gun is exceptionally well built. I’m all around pleased. Type G by Rob Miller in Ohio. 41”, .62 caliber smoothbore weighing just over 5lbs.    Looking forward to working up loads and spending some time in the woods. Eventually. |

Thanks, ‘Nock. Need a few things to get shooting and start working up loads. First of which is… time. Spring hunts are likely out of the question, but Autumn is coming… and my soul needs refreshed.

You'll enjoy that firelock... I do love my M Brooks type G and carry it often more than my other pieces. If I could have one firelock I must say she'd be it.
Is she stocked in beech?

Hey, Hawk'. Stocked in Walnut, but the stain job and aging is well done and the grain pattern is generic enough to pass for European Walnut or Beech. I think he took a page out of Dave Persons' book on the stock finish. It is perfectly balanced and very light and I'm surprised how naturally it shoulders and how quickly I get a sight picture. Like... I would feel confident in wingshooting with it. I'm looking forward to spending time in the woods with it. My German-Swiss persona has decided to choose a 'tool' for his trip to the Susquehanna, rather than spending his coin on something finer.  Now... gather things to feed this arm and try to find time to work up shot and ball loads. Thoughts and suggestions welcome! |

My current loads (depending on which 20 gauge smoothbore I'm shooting and what I'm shooting) are: 80 grains 3f, thin card, lubed wad (either felt or faux-tow), .610 ball, thin card. Or, 65 grains 3f, thin card, and same ball/wad/card combo as above or a .595 ball patched with lubed .010 drill. Or, 75 grains 2f, dry felt wad, lubed faux-tow wadding .610 ball, thin card. (Soon to test this with 2x1" paper folded to 1x1" in place of the dry wad) Shot loads. 62 grains powder, thin card, lubed wadding, 1oz #5 shot (usually in a pre-made shot cup/cartridge), thin card. Or, 75 grains powder, 1 1/8oz #5 shot, loaded Skychief style. |

Smoothbores are new to me. All my experience is with rifles. Looking forward to fooling around with wads, tow, card, etc. |

75 grains FFFg, lubed posterboard overpowder card, premade shot load and a thin mailing envelope overshot card. Ball is loaded over 75 grains FFFg with a lubed 0.010 patch.

Something along the lines of a treatise for loading sporting arms, or memoirs relating that sort of minutiae.

And this from Thomas Page, in "The Art of Shooting Flying" and stolen from Spence's website, home.insightbb.com/~bspen/aimwell.htmlBut that is dealing with shot loads. My thinking on it is has evolved over time. We have no period accounts of ball being loaded in a smoothbore using a patch until a late period account of some French types doing it, post 1800 late... And, I can see where a patch would be a foreign concept in gun cultures where smoothbores were the norm and shot loads were just as likely to be used or moreso. And fowling pieces/buck-n-ball guns, trade guns, and Fusils were the common gun. Not to mention muskets. But, I do wonder if smoothrifles may have been loaded with a patch given that they would have been built and used where rifle culture was more ingrained and the same gun but with rifling would have used a patch. Might a Type-G user in rifle country, and they do seem to predominantly be found in areas where rifles were known sooner than places like New England, have used a patch with roundball as that was the cultural norm for the rifle users around them? If so, why? Is it just cultural? I really don't find much advantage to using a patch for roundball in my smoothbores, really just simplicity. |

I'd be interested to hear your results with the folded paper. I've fiddled with it a fair amount, would like to compare notes.
What is your "faux-tow"?

I really don't find much advantage to using a patch for roundball in my smoothbores, really just simplicity. I use a lubed patch for the same reason as I use greased paper for my premade shot loads. I tried shot (shot is unplated) without the greased paper and got terrible fouling (and leading?) after 1 or 2 shots, so much so that reloading was extremely difficult. I will play with Tow one day, but my guns are primarily for hunting and I chose the most expedient option. BTW - the cards are punched to bore size with a piece of sharpened barrel - lubed with deer tallow. |

Looks like shotgunning is going to be a new adventure. Wads, card(?), shot loads… Ball I have a good understanding of how to go through from my rifle days. Time to procure some powder and other necessities.
