If inlet into the wooden butt of a horn, it is very unlikely to be damaged. Think of the gymnastics needed to hit the butt of your horn - would even defy what you see in the Olympics. I'd be more concerned about drilling too deep or the hole weakening the plug (and cracking with normal wood movement or if dropped)...

I'd be concerned that a magnet would be pointing at a very large metal object I'm carrying instead of towards "north." The magnetized compass needle might be pointing "north" in the direction of the very long barrel of my swamped Beck style barrel or smoothies. I know putting the firearm down, and walking a short distance away might take care of that possible problem. Still, I prefer being able to rely on navigational skills that I've acquired, and don't want to be dependent on an item that can be lost, broken, or attracted by a gun barrel.
