So, I made a modification/addition to the bag, and, took it to the range the other day to continue the experiment with both this bag and possible light loads in my 20 gauge smoothrifle (written about elsewhere). I think I will copy this design with the addition out of better materials, using what I learned about the new techniques and design features that I tried on this bag. It worked out very well, though, I do still prefer a bag/flap design that does not require a button. As of now I still find buttoning the bag closed after every shot to be an annoyance, but probably one I will just get used to, and, I don't shoot and reload that much when deer or turkey hunting.
The addition is of a small inside pocket that hangs freely from just under the flap seam. It holds a strip of lubed patch material, or, a bunch of thin overshot cards and/or lubed felt wads nicely. Keeps the patch material in the same place, free from tangling with ball pouch and powder measure, and so I don't get lube on my other stuff.
here is one of the small bag pulled out for size reference to the rest of the shot pouch,
I went with the button attachment for two reasons. The 1st being that I was still not sure if this bag will wind up used as a shot pouch or for carrying turkey calls. By using the buttons I can remove this bag and make and button on a sheath that holds my slate call strikers. 2nd, I didn't want another full stitch line across the back giving another potential weak point/leak point, I figured the 4 tiny holes needed to attach the buttons would be easier to seal. Now, when I make a dedicated hunting/shot pouch following this design I don't think I will use the buttons, I will stitch it in with the line of stitching for the flap.
While I have made other bags. Most nicer, or at least of better materials. Most more arguably hc/pc. I learned a lot making this bag, and really don't think it turned out that bad. Only thing left to do is treat it with the neatsfoot oil I bought, then, give it some honest use treatment.
