Does anyone make steel ball molds that will work on Lyman handles? Basically copies of Lyman moulds? Lyman doesn't make a .595 mould, and after inquiry with them, they won't make one for me. I know Tanner in Britain makes brass moulds in almost any size one can imagine, but, I'm not sure what handles they fit. Not sure also what extra costs are incurred ordering one from this side of "the pond." Don't want an aluminum, double cavity, Lee.
Thanks folks.

Contact Larry Callahan. He is the only person I've ever purchased from to run ball from a mold, he may be able to whip you something up. I've had him make me several custom calibers, he is phenomenal. Be ordering another for my .58 soon. bagmolds.com

Larry Callahan has died, maybe a year ago. I seem to recall a son is continuing the service, can't be sure.
Brokennock, what are you shooting the .595 balls in? What is the ID of your barrel?

Callahan only makes bag molds, which I also intend to get at some point. I would like to get a Lyman style mold with the spruce cutter gate. Which the Jeff Tanner moulds don't have either.

You may be better off with a .60 mold and a slightly thinner patch...

Yeah, I had read your previous posts, didn't see the bore diameter mentioned.
The reason I asked is that I've had very good results in my .615" bore using a .600" ball with a variety of wads/patches, and I was curious why you were set on the .595".

I have a .600 bag mold/mould. And, a Lyman .610 mold/mould. The .600 shoots great from my Fusil des Chase. This smoothrifle is weird. With my usual charge of 85 grains of 3f, it shoots best with a looser fitting combo, either the .595 ball with a .010 patch, or, even better, with a wad combo of 2 thin overshot cards on top of the powder, then a lubed felt wad, the ball, then another thin card to hold it all in place. With the light load it shoots the same with the .595 ball in either patch, but ,the looser combo is so much easier to load, why mess with it for no advantage. I haven't gotten to play with these loads and a chronograph, yet, but, I am thinking that the smaller thus lighter ball is helping gain velocity lost by the smaller powder charge. I can't help but notice that over the years on other forums, most people's most accurate smoothbore loads with roundball seem to favor heavier powder charges, and thus more velocity, compared to a similar bore size rifle.

He did custom work, he would have been able to manufacture what you wanted which is why I recommended him. Didn't know he passed, I bought two additional molds from him before he moved on, which was about a year ago. Talked with him on the phone for awhile about building and various interests, very knowledgeable and always a pleasure to converse with. Sad to hear. Make yourself a soapstone mold, you could have a machine shop make you a a few custom sized cherries for the mold cavity.

Spence, You may be thinking of a different Larry Callahan or possibly his father. I just bought a whole set of accouterments from him as well as a custom bag mold and we spoke several times for about and hour at a stretch. Larry is quite alive and well and an excellent man to talk to about a great many things!! The Sicilian

I'm pleased to hear that. I've never dealt with him, I was just passing along what was posted on MLF. Mea culpa.

There it is again, I was right, and I was wrong. The ball mold maker so much praised that I was thinking of did pass away, in about October, 2018. Problem is, it was not Larry Callahan but Jeff Tanner.
Getting old is not for sissies.

Sighs of relief! I jumped on his website for a custom .58 mold this morning. Good to know he'll be the one calling me.

But depending on what that costs I'll probably be stuck with the Lee, at least for a while.
