Started finger weaving a yellow strap from 100% wool today and have woven approximately 4"... With only a small amount done it reminds me that it truly is a love hate affair and I lean more towards hating than loving... However the end results are always worth the effort. Should be a great strap for this sheath reproduction.

How many strands? I know I've asked this elsewhere and didn't get an answer, is there a way to calculate how long a strand one needs to start with do get a given length strap?

How many strands? I know I've asked this elsewhere and didn't get an answer, is there a way to calculate how long a strand one needs to start with do get a given length strap? 28 total strands. My calculation isn't precise for length in all honesty. Personally for a shoulder strap I usually make my strands about 5ft which gives me about 38" of finished strap. For a sash, current one I'm weaving strands are 9ft and number 96 individually... That honestly is yielding a sash close to 3" wide. I personally cannot weave with any outside distraction, even a small strap such as the one above... Tried doing what you see above at work on and off and always have to adjust my attention and mind when returning back to the piece. I do enjoy finger weaving when I'm able to devote 100% of my focus. The process really is easy, hardest part for me personally is setting up and the first few weaves. After that keeping my eyeballs from going cross and loosing focus on a starnd, which equates to backtracking is about it occasionally. Therapeutic in a way, but quickly agitates me if I'm bothered. In short... I really don't have a precise method for measuring, I've done it so much winging the length has just become natural for whatever I'm wanting to do. Horn straps, I like using 18 strands, 5ft lengths. Bag straps (pictured one) 28 strands, 5ft lengths. (Same for leg ties) Sash, my minimum is 96 strands, 9ft lengths. I like solid colors, more HC than some of the fancy weaves however not necessarily easier honestly... You'll find solid colors can be frustrating to keep track of in terms of mistakes. Thats why if I'm getting frustrated I walk away! If I'm adding beadwork it's rather simple, just takes some planning and thinking ahead. I like adding beading to the tails once finished, but adding edge beading is very easy as well and what I personally like. Hope my babling helps!
