PARanger, Although we saw deer, in this state you have a lottery draw for just about all game. Finding the cave was the big score, however!! I think that rockhouse will be the site of an upcoming winter trek!!

Beautiful country, very different than what I'm used to. How are the game populations overall were you reside?

Hawk, Honestly, its hard to say what the population is vs the harvest. NM has a stupid lottery system for just about all game and I don't trust the numbers. I am trying for a bear hunt which is one of the rare over the counter tags. The only problem is that when the game unit harvest reaches 30% of the bear population then they shut the unit down to hunting and your tag is invalid, you have to check the Game&Fish website before every hunt... Hunting cougar is the same deal. Another reason this state sucks!!

Beautiful find and good pictures. Thanks. I can never see anything about a rockhouse without remembering Daniel Trabue and his adventure with one. Daniel spent time as a young man in the Virginia militia at Logan's Fort in eastern Kentucky in the period of about 1778-1781. While returning from his home back to Logan's Fort in 1780 he wound up traveling with a group of families, and his adventure began when he and two others went hunting for bear to feed the group. All this is described in the book Trabue wrote, Westward into Kentucky, which is my favorite book about life in my area during the revolutionary period. It is available online, but I'm unable to copy and paste from it, it's a bit long for me to type in, so I'm going to try giving a link to the book at the appropriate page in case anyone is interested in reading it. This should be at the bottom of page 85, ....select the Page 85 button...and you should start reading at the paragraph beginning with "Major John Downey proposed...". The tale stretches over the next 3-4 pages, a quick read. Hope this works. books.google.com/books?id=4KweBgAAQBAJ&q=Major+John#v=onepage&q=Major%20John%20Downey%20proposed&f=falseIf there are problems let me know and I'll try again. Sicilianhunter, on your winter campout in the rockhouse, be sure to check for a back door. Spence
