I am just finishing this up; I have about 11 hours in it so far. If you happened to see the Russia Red leather thread, this is the project I bought it for. My intent was to reproduce an English sporting gentleman's bag. As such, I have attempted to incorporate high quality period appropriate materials, including the Russia red leather, commercially tanned deerskin welting and trim, as well as construction techniques and hardware readily available to the 18th c. saddler or harness maker. A kidney-shaped double pouch, it measures approximately 9 inches wide and 8 inches tall, with a fully welted construction. In preparation for this project, I studied numerous period images. Though this is not a "bench copy" of any one particular bag, it incorporates features of several in the images that I found, including one in a portrait of Sir Edward Hales by Phillippe Mercier c. 1744 (pictured in another thread). I am currently planning to add a detachable hemp mesh game bag, which will be secured to the brass rings by matching leather straps and brass buckles.

Looking very good. I'd say that's going to be a first class outfit when you get it finished. The red Russian leather is attractive. A nice interpretation of the double bag of Hales, I like the way you handled the brass rings.
Now comes the big problem, finding an English Gentleman to carry it.

You're right - heaven knows I can't do THAT impression! I suppose now I need a nice English walnut stocked, silver mounted, hooked breech fowler to go with it... 🤔😏

Amazingly well done. You nailed it I think. 11 hours does not seem enough, that would certainly take me longer.
Maybe a native warrior took it off the gentleman after an ambush,,,, and you took it off the native after you and the gentleman's neighbors tracked the war party and took vengeance.

LOL, you are too kind, Nock. I have seen your work, and it is none too shabby! This definitely pushed to the edge of the envelope for me, but, after all, that was half the point of the project. Still waiting for the little buckles to attach the game bag with. We'll see how that all works out soon, hopefully.

Masterful work is more in the eye of the beholder - we are our own worst critics and find fault as well as being painfully aware of our perceived mistakes.

Thanks for the kind words, and don't forget that it's a journey, my friend - and we all start in more or less the same place. I learn from every project as well as from each of you most every post.

I agree, and appreciate the helping attitude of everyone on this forum, so many people on the net can be such know-it-all-jerks LOL. I do have a question, in reference to leather work, what exactly is a welt? what is the purpose of it, and how is it done?

A welt is that piece of leather that is sewn between the 2 main pouch pieces. It primarily serves to protect the stitching. Think of the welt in a knife sheath - the edge is in contact with leather or rawhide rather than the thread used to sew it together (3 layers instead of 2).
