Another pair from moose hide. As you can see my stitching is tight and together, very even as are Black Hands examples. Might I suggest brining two pieces of scrap leather together for good practice. Once you nail the technique, you'll be off to the races.

Agree. Just a little. They were super tight then slipped a bit when I transitioned from the pucker to the center seam. This deerskin is so much easier to work with. I’m learning. Maybe after a few pair I’ll have the skills to do something like a winter shoepack for flintlock season.
No more kits.

Looking much better. If you want to be like me when you grow up,,,,, 1st my advice is,,,,,,, DON'T! Second, the best way to be like me, is to not grow up.* *But there are serious negatives to this.

With using deer hide you'll become very seasoned making them rather quickly. Its not uncommon to wear them out in a few outings given terrain. I switched to using elk and moose to enhance long-term performance. I also will affix a sole of sorts of the same hide material. Saved my foot a few times from locust thorns.

That’s definitely the next step… investing in better material. These inexpensive kits are giving me the experience in fit and construction. I went back and read the older posts that mentioned elk and moose. Once I have this down I’ll order some up. Thanks for the help with my first Spring project!

Of the 2 choices, I'd go with moose. Elk will work, but it doesn't wear as well.

Splits, yeah?

Braintan if you can. You can scrape the epidermis off a full-grain hide if you can't afford braintan and use commercial hides. Personally I'd avoid splits. Full-grain oiltan moose for shoepacs - tough as nails and supple.

Not bad at all for round one, functional and sures heck pucker toe mocs. Nothing beats being light on the feet in the forest whilst wearing mocs.
