I understand the interest. It's an impressive process, and would be good skill to have.

I've never tried sand casting, but if I ever decide to, I'm ready. This is a maple tool for tamping the sand in the mold. <button disabled="" class="c-attachment-insert--linked o-btn--sm">Attachment Deleted</button> Spence Excellent Spence, a must have! Beautiful piece by the way. Wouldn't mind giving it a whack! Joking aside I've been considering this for awhile. I have all the necessary components minus a crucible... The crucible is within, hawkling.

It's the first place I look for nearly everything - I hate shopping in stores...too many people.
Amazon did let me down when I was looking for jumbo white turkey feathers for replicating eagle feathers.

How jumbo, Hand? I can look and see what I have stashed with the fly tying materials. I had some fairly large ones at one time.

12-16 inches or better. Some Eagle feathers are amazingly large. If you know a source, I'd like to try my hand at airbrushing some replicas.
Sorry for the thread derail Spence - back to the regularly scheduled program.

New evidence. The Farmer's Return, Johan Joseph Zoffany, 1762, Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection Looks like a large square brass buckle on a wide leather belt, to me. With a brass tongue, too. Spence

That painting raised some questions. What is the purpose of the belt between the waistcoat and green coat? Is the green, long-sleeved coat what is called a jacket? Are the large cuffs with a long vent unique?....I never ran across those. Would the heavy brown coat he has hung over the back of his chair be a great coat? What is the purpose of the leather straps around each of his thighs?

Absolutely! Leave it to the French! Honestly, a very interesting piece, could also be dubbed "the acorn buckle"...

I was thinking the leather straps keep his stockings up. Maybe his breaches don't fit well anymore and they keep the bottoms of the breaches from rising up and the stockings from falling down? I was only of the impression that he is wearing a regular coat over a waistcoat. Could the larger and heavier looking coat be a greatcoat and worn as an overcoat, especially in cold or inclement weather? What is the large oddly shaped object on the wall behind them all the way to the right?

I have been experimenting on how/where to wear a belt when wearing layers such as a waist coat and coat, I began by wearing the belt over the top of everything, because I like to wear a belt pouch and knife, & thinking these items would be easier to get at on the out side, but found the belt over the coat restricted my movement quite a bit, and felt "bound up" ( not sure how else to put it) most of this was in a hunting or trekking scenario, so I began to notice the belt being worn under the outer layer in period images, such as this one, so I tried it and found it much more comfortable and allowed much more freedom of movement, the belt pouch and knife are really not hard to reach if you leave the last couple coat/jacket buttons undone. I don't think he is wearing a jacket, its too long, and looks like a common frock coat to me, the large cuffs being slit is a new one to me also. I have seen the garters above the knee in several images, and guessed it was a preference to help keep the sock up...dunno. Nock It looks kinda like a piece of cured beef or pork to me...?

You can see that he has ties on his breeches below the knee. I've found that such ties keep the breeches down and the stocking up, nothing else needed.
That oddly shaped thing is possibly a hind quarter of meat. Townsend has this painting on his site, and mentions meat as one thing shown in it.
