I'm watching the Kubrick film Barry Lyndon again, and, as usual, am struck by the painterly beauty of the photography. All natural light, even the interiors lighted only by candles. What a masterpiece.

Thank you for the suggestion Spence. Maybe I'll check it out. I don't really watch movies or t.v. anymore as I can't separate the dialog from the music and sound effects. But if the cinematography is that good, maybe I'll give it a try.

I use it when watching videos in Spanish, as I can understand the text better than the spoken word due to speed or pronunciation.

I find it loses something reading it. Lind of like on these forums, or text messages with someone you don't know really well. Something gets lost when reading what is said without the inflection. Maybe it takes practice?

Maybe it takes practice? It does, and closed captioning can lose something when translated from one language to another. I watch a lot of movies and videos in other languages. You'd be surprised what you can pick up on and learn when you don't speak the language or even hear what is said. Good communication/good learning needs not words to be effective.

Question for the peanut gallery....
There is an unusual duel in this movie. Instead of the usual procedure where the two antagonists stand with pistols pointed at each other and fire simultaneously, the two take turns firing at the other, and they flip a coin to see who fires first. It might just be a Hollywoodie thing, but the movie seems historically accurate otherwise, so it makes me wonder it this duel is based on some old reality. I've never heard of such a duel, has anyone else?

I've read of it, but I don't remember where. I can't remember if it was said to be an alternative method, or a fallacy. Both seem like a bad idea, but, if I has to choose, I'll go with the simultaneous shots.

Sorry, still haven't watched it. Did a little looking into it though. Great cast. Seems like an interesting story looking at the story and character it is based on.

As with most everything in life, I'm sure the movie won't please everyone. It's certainly about as far as possible from our longhunters or the Leatherstocking Tales. Definitely fiction, and hardly required watching. I do believe it gives us an accurate look into the world of the 18th-century aristocrat in Britain and Europe, though, and that's certainly an integral part of the history we are interested in.

I have seen the movie Spence, but truthfully I was not impressed. This is probably due to the fact that I do not like Ryan O'Neal as an actor, there is something about that bloke that just irritates me. Keith.

I hear you, Keith. O'Neal is a bit of a problem for me, too, but I am able to appreciate the film in spite of him.
