I've been aware of a very good reference book on rifles and the way they work since I got into the hobby almost 45 years ago, but have never gotten my hands on it. A link to a PDF of the book was recently posted on The Muzzleloading Forum, I checked it out and can recommend it to anyone interested in such things. It is _The Bullet’s Flight, from Powder to Target, the Internal and External Ballistics of Small Arms_, 1909, by F. W. Mann, B.S., M.D. duienforcers.wildapricot.org/Resources/Documents/BulletsFlightPowderTarget_Mann_MunnCo_1909.pdfSpence
