Got me some good Pennsylvania rye, personally (pc, of course) Ranger, I've not had Rye whiskey. How does it differ from the usual? Is there a brand that replicates the Rye Whiskey made in the colonies? BH In terms of flavor, I would describe rye as sort of a cross between scotch and bourbon: not quite as sweet as bourbon, but not quite as much bite as scotch. There are a burgeoning number of small craft distilleries popping up in PA that are trying to revive rye. The one I am currently drinking is from a micro-distillery called Eight Oaks. That said, some of the larger national bourbon and Tennessee whiskey distilleries are also doing small batch rye: Knob Creek, for example. Hard to know for certain, but I would say the modern versions are reasonable facsimiles of period PA rye - the official beverage of the Whiskey Rebellion.

Rye is my everyday whiskey, though I readily admit the superiority of a good single malt Scotch. A local distillery here at the Forks of the Ohio, Wigle dist., makes some excellent Rye, and that is my usual. The Best that I have tasted is Old Potrero, made by Anchor Distillery in San Francisco. I keep a bottle here for a very special occasion, should one come along.
Try to find Rye that is almost pure rye, a lot of it is mixed with Bourbon. One of the Wigle's uses 95% Rye and 5% Irish, nice.
