Joists went up this morning! Roofing next... What kind of fasteners? There is a combination of treenails in visible joints and screws and lag bolts in areas that will be hidden when complete.

Maybe we should have a section for historical buildings and sites? We could include places we have visited, volunteered at, just seen while out on a drive, period buildings we have worked on or constructed.

Pararanger,
GREAT to see they/you are doing re-constructed buildings!
Does the barracks have some kind of footing or foundation under the bottom logs or are they just sitting on the ground?
On the outdoor oven, did they board it up in the winter to retain the heat?
Loved the bark used as roofing tiles on the covered roof over the traveling forge. Matter of fact, I REALLY enjoyed seeing the traveling forge itself! Does anyone ever use it? I would have a hundred or more questions to ask of someone who used it. It's kind of an "Artificer Thing." LOL!!
Besides the other barracks, are their other buildings planned for re-construction? If so, any idea when they may be started?
I had planned on visiting the Fort this year, but Corvid and some health issues got in the way. Should have them taken care of by the end of fall/early winter, though, so I'm GOING to finally get there next year.
Do they have the schedule of events for next year, yet? I prefer to come visit when there is an event or the Trade Fair. Oh, is the Museum open during the event weekends? I've been dying to see that for years!
My basic plan is to start in Eastern PA and gorge myself on 18th century sites and Amish food, as I work my way across to end at Fort Pitt.

Gus,
Yes, we are very excited about the reconstruction, too!
To answer your questions, the barracks is built on footers to keep the structure up off the ground for longevity sake, but they are concealed beneath fascia boards, as the original logs would likely have just sat on the ground. This is the first of two barracks documented to the fort. Future plans include a storehouse (we already have grant and donation money to start that, and it is planned tentatively for construction next year). Stables are also planned after that, as well as the second barracks and officers' quarter at some future time TBD). All of this assumes that the stream of funding and volunteers continue, of course.
As to tbe traveling forge, it is fully operational, and we do have a local blacksmith who uses it for demos during events. He was quite popular at the Market Faire in June. Not sure about the bake oven being enclosed in winter. To my knowledge we have no documentation on that.
I have not seen an event schedule for next year as yet, but I do know the Market Faire was considered a great success, and likely will be repeated next year - probably around the end of June. As soon as a more definitive schedule comes out, I will post it here. Hope to see you there one day soon!

Pararanger,
Great Info, Thank you!
It thought "something" was going on with the fascia boards at the bottom of the barracks. That's a good compromise between historic accuracy and losing it to rot from the ground long before it should. Much easier to replace fascia boards then the bottom layer of logs.
Wondering about how well the exposed outdoor oven would bake in a cold PA winter?
I appreciate any info you can give on next year's events when it becomes available!
Very much looking forward to meeting you in person when I get a chance to come!
Gus
