Spence, I'm still pondering the idea of it being a chain trammel... I've came across another period example of an identical piece. However potentially may be something entirely different obviously. I'll try and recall the documents today. A very neat find, I have an original spit that would pair EXTREMELY well with that piece. I'm still drawing a blank on other uses...? Certainly a good conversation piece to get the mind going.

I'm positive this is a trammel... Small hook portion on the ring for selecting height, and the large hook for hanging your cooking implement. Very ornately made, love it.

The one thing which makes me wonder if it's a trammel is the length of the chain. How would a trammel 5 feet long work?

If one hook was attached to a hanging chain over a fire, & the other hook supported a kettle, then this would allow you to pull the kettle within reach to remove it or stir it. Just a thought. I have two chains hanging from a buggy axle over an open fire up at the cottage. Keith.
