A cape would drive me up a wall - all that fabric to get in the way and flapping in the wind... I'm in this frame of mind myself. I personally dislike capes of any kind accept Christian Bales cape from Batman begins... However, very, very interesting piece. I certainly wouldn't mind replicating one myself. One thing that has always struck me as a nuisance of the longer shirt tails is all that extra fabric stuffed into one's breeches... Drives me bonkers having all that fabric stuffed down and bunched up. Anyone else bothered by this conundrum?

I see this garment as outerwear - no breeches-stuffing...

Many descriptions of hunting shirts say they reach down to mid-thigh, but this one is obviously much longer than that. It was made many years after the AWI, but it reminds me of a period description from 1776.
From Naval Documents of the American Revolution, V. 3, letter from a midshipman aboard the HMS Liverpool, off Norfolk, as published in the Public Advertiser, London, March 13, 1776:
"The Rebels are called Shirtmen for their Uniforms, being a long Shirt down to their Heels, with a Leaden Medal at their Breasts, in the Shape of an old English Shield, on which is inscribed, "Liberty or Death."

Thanks, Gus. I have a large format book of AWI uniforms, thought I might find the Culpepper Riflemen in it, but no luck.

Spence They were also known as the "Culpepper Minutemen" attached to and under the command of Colonel Woodford of the 2nd VA Regiment. Some had the leaden shields while others had the words "Liberty or Death" embroidered on their hunting shirts. Gus

I'm going to start the "Lemon-Pepper" two-minute men (ain't none of us getting younger)! Who's with me?!
We can use the Crow shirt as our uniform shirt. I am thinking the narrow cape will be far less annoying than one that comes all the way around the shoulders.
On third thought, given most of our ages (you will catch up Ben) maybe it should be the "salt-and-pepper" 5-minute-men?

In the day just wearing any hunting shirt could land you in trouble. THE VIRGINIA GAZETTE 3 August 11, 1775 NORFOLK, August 9. Norfolk borough, committee chamber, WHEREAS it appears, from undoubted testimony, that a certain John Schaw, of this borough, did, in the presence of lord Dunmore, officiously point out to the soldiery at Gosport one Alexander Main, fifer to one of the volunteer companies of this place, as a person who ought to be apprehended for his imprudence (as the said Schaw expressed himself) in wearing a hunting shirt in their presence, in consequence of which the unhappy man was apprehended, and is now, by his lordship's order, confined on board the Otter sloop of war: We therefore think it our duty to declare that the said SCHAW has herein shewn himself a busy tool, and an enemy to American liberty, and as such we advise every friend to his country to have no farther dealing or connexion with him. In my fifties, we in the Major's Coy of the Forty Twa considered ourselves "Heavy Infantry," who preferred to stand and fight to the death as running could mean the same thing. LOL!! Gus

It's obviously post revolution, much resembling the hunting frocks of the early 19th c. The capes taper and shrink from them on into the 20th c.
