I made myself a belt last year but wanted to make one for my son. However the only buckle I have is without the center bar. Not really sure if there’s any 18th-century documentation for about like this though I know it is very common in earlier time periods.

Easy enough to add the central prong with a finish nail, hammer, file and pliers...(if I'm understanding your question correctly)

I've never found good documentation for the width of 18th-century belts. The only specific references to that which I've found simply say the hunting shirt is held closed by a "wide leather belt" or a "broad belt"...how wide, how broad? Does anyone have info on this"

This general style goes back to 1350 according to this site: finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/buckles/Double D or Double Oval Buckles were extremely common right up to the end of the 18th century as they have been found in archeological sites all over North America. I also always thought a cotter pin would make a fine and easy center prong.
