Not exactly a trek but a good day in the field with my family reacting a battle. It was a good experience and opportunity to try out our gear in cold weather. It was 28Β° and freezing rain and snow. One of the best purchases of my life was buying a handmade toque from a fellow reenactor. Itβs now going to be part of my permanent kit. Linen and wool do a good job except when the wind gusts of almost 30 mph winds would cut right through it all. The winds were bad enough that the shelters were being knocked over when the stakes pulled out of the muddy ground. Makes one of appreciate viscerally what the continental troops went through at places like Valley Forge and Morristown.

You are blessed to have then participated and enjoy it. Don't send them... Trade school, one a plumber one and electrician. Always needed, by all types of people. One in each field they will have business in that area locked up and be helping dad retire early in no time, π

Trades all the way!
If one isn't afraid of work... Most my age and younger are and it drives me insane.
I'd keep my trade skills over a high level college education any day, wouldn't ever go back and change my path even if I could.

Well, they are both almost genius (don't know where they got that from); they are only juniors and one is being courted by Yale and Norte Dame (but they don't like that kind of college). But they both have their hearts set on the service academies like West Point, the Naval Academy, etc. One is focused on Annapolis right now (he just accepted into their summer program) and the other on the Coast Guard Academy. Right now they are working to get their interviews together with our congressman to get their nomination. They are also finishing up their Eagle Scout. They've been invited to spend the night with the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech next month. If they choose that they'll be closer to home.

Awesome. I've had work with both Academies as well as Texas A&M, all great schools, very tough standards. If son #2 comes up to New London you both be sure to let me know, we will get together and he will have someone nearby to call for help if needed.
