Do it. It’s been really enjoyable. A huge time commitment for something that historically was a disposable garment, but I couldn’t be happier. Though, from 5 feet away, it looks about like the off-the-rack options from Townsends. Whatever… it’s mine. Looking forward to finishing this up and starting more sewing projects. Snapsack Leggings Gaiters A shirt Another shirt Wool waistcoat Greatcoat … But you have the immeasurable satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself. BINGO.. Being able to craft and create ones own articles and accoutrements is very enjoyable and immensely rewarding in such a disposable materialistic world.

Goes with my overall desire to gain some self reliance… not just period, but I’m general.

Spence, your images and comment brings something to mind. I don’t know that I’ve seen a period image of a closed front smock with a belt or sash. They’re always just loose. That’s interesting. I don't recall seeing that, either. I had to try it that way. It worked alright, you just have to plan ahead for not having a belt/sash to hang stuff on. Spence

The smock is looking good, and I like the sash. The model...well...

I like the little patch, too. I go back and forth on hemming the very bottom. Your bit of fringe looks good. I kinda like the sash too… and agree on the model. Looks a bit the ruffian.

Our smocks look very similar with the wider shoulder so the seam is a bit down the arm. That's how they fit - the shoulder seam was not at the natural shoulder/arm junction, rather fell around the deltoid.

Agree… I do think the arm seams on my frock and Spence’s are both a bit lower on the arm than what you commonly see in period images, though I do have one or two that show it this low. Certainly lower on the arm compared to some of the iffy commercially available smocks.

There is an honest hole behind the patch, and a darn on the other side which doesn't show. I never made fringe for the bottom, just never hemmed it, and after 25 years, voila! It is widely claimed that the main reason for such smocks is to protect the other clothes. I don't believe that is the only reason, but they do function that way. My cuff. Spence

That frock has mojo. What other purposes have you thought of, Spence?

Nothing very original, it's just that in some situations protecting better clothes is not the main thing going on. In the photo above of the squirrel hunt, I'm going as a Cohee, have only a clout under the smock, not even a shirt, so the smock is the clothes. In cold weather, I wear several layers, and the smock is not always the outer, protective layer, just one of several. It's a night shirt on some treks. With minimal treatment around the edges with permethrin it's an excellent shield against ticks and chiggers. I wound up with a fair collection of clothes over the years, but this smock is hands down my favorite and most used item. Spence

Excellent insight, Spence. Buttons and buttonholes done. On to armscythes and bottom hem.
