Hoping you guys can help me think of what this tool is called? More importantly, what is the historically correct way of constructing one?
I’ve seen several guys using a system for cleaning their smoothbore; they wrap tow around some kind of plug at the end of a long piece of rope or leather Wang that is tied to an antler horn handle or wooden dowel.
They ram this down the barrel with their ram rod, and then pull it out to retract the tow and powder residue.
Is this explanation clear? Do you guys know what I’m talking about?

I've heard of such a thing and have no idea what people call it. Get a worm and use it instead of the whatchamacallit that likely isn't PC/HC. One less thing to clutter up your gun bag...

I believe you are referring to what some call a "tow 'n' toggle" and that is the only name for it I've heard. I do believe I have seen that it is a confirmed period item. I don't know about a plug. The ones I have seen were just a dowel, I guess antler could be used, with a length of cordage attached. At the other end is a loop to which a wad of tow can be secured. Wet the tow, push it down the bore, pull out, repeat as needed. Rinse. Maybe repeat with dried tow?

For what it's worth, wasn't the use of the "tow 'n' toggle" normally used only with smoothbore guns, or not? Gus

Very interesting piece as I've never heard of a period "bore sneeeek". My small brain wonders though, what exactly would be the purpose outside a worm and wiping rod? In almost all circumstances you'll need your rod regardless.

I seem to recall the Lewis & Clark expedition pausing at some point to cut "wiping sticks" to clean their guns.
