Coffee is like the finest stone, sharpening you for your task. Rum is the strop, taking off the wire edge.

Need to find something to punch out the strap holes… but one side is decorated. View AttachmentA turkey on the reverse, methinks… Very nicely done. Holes? Got a .22 in the house and a back porch? (Or a stump in the basement for splitting woodstove kindling, to use as a backstop,,,, don't ask where I got the idea) Lol

Did someone mention... Coffee? Day is done, gone the sun. Day is done, gone the sun, TIME FOR RUM!

With a canteen, I wax from the inside - add molten wax, swirl, pour out and place in a warm oven. Repeat until the wax comes through the leather. Then wax well from the outside, allow to cool, scrape off the extra wax and buff with canvas to remove the excess.

Thanks, Hand. I’m taking notes for when I go for a watertight canteen. I did wax inside as well. I learned a ton from this first small project. Gotta clean things up, espec the edges. Then… strap, stopper, shot measure. But I’m pleased with how it turned out and I know how to do better! Tough to see the design work, but it came out perfectly. Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAnd paint on leather then hot waxed with beeswax works a treat! Hard, perfectly permeated leather with a wax topcoat on the paint. Vibrant colors. If I can get my painting skills up to par, Pennsylvania German-Swiss fraktur designs on jackware is a viable option. Attachment DeletedThis stuff is fun. Now… Back to my linen soaking in walnut mordant…

Well done, playing with hot beeswax usually sends my ocd through the roof... haha.
I actually have one of those small crock pots that holds a 1lb block of wax perfectly. I always just melt over my woodstove. May be worth checking a few thrift stores for one as it's rather convenient.
Side note, that crock pot is also great for candle making. I'm able to bust out beeswax candles with ease now.

Great idea, Hawkeyes! My OCD was seriously cranked.
My 5-year-old Nora thinks I made a maraca. 🤦♂️

Thanks! Thinking about what I want to do for a strap. Leather or woven. Also a stopper. I’ve long thought about a stopper that doubles as a shot measure. Frugal Swiss-German and one less dangly thing.
The ‘carving’ is simply scratched in with an awl and then given a ‘round’ bottom with a blunt saddle needle. I did this after wet-forming, when the leather was dry, and with the sand still inside. Folksy.

Not that they would've thought about it then, but...

I assumed he meant a stopper for this test piece meant to carry shot.

I assumed he meant a stopper for this test piece meant to carry shot. Yup. This shot flask, not the eventual canteen. But! Thanks for looking out for me, paranger!
