An item I've never heard of or thought about showed up in the Tom Wnuck auction. I have no information about the attribution, but it is labeled "Indian trade haversack". Spence

That is a curious piece indeed, Spence.
Fully understanding the reputation of collectors like Wnuck, Neumann, Kravic et al., without any further provenance information or documentation, I would personally have a hard time putting too much stock in that attribution, though...

That is a curious piece indeed, Spence. Fully understanding the reputation of collectors like Wnuck, Neumann, Kravic et al., without any further provenance information or documentation, I would personally have a hard time putting too much stock in that attribution, though... I think one needs to keep in mind that the labels on lots in an estate auction were put there by the auction staff, and the expertise of the collector may not have been available/used in the decision making. For instance, in this same auction there are a couple of lots of knives which have what I think are plug bayonets included. They all look like knives to the uninitiated. I think Wnuck would have known what they were, but not necessarily the auction staff. In the case of this item, though, I can't imagine the staff coming up with the idea that this was an Indian trade haversack. Surely they had some input from Wnuck's records, or some such. But, what do I know. Spence
