Moccasins While reading this journal of a British traveler in America in 18/early 19th century came across this reference to a tavern owner wearing moccasins. This is noteworthy because this is not on a frontier settlement or outer reaches of a colony but in what is now called Newark New Jersey, 1798. just a ferry ride across from New York City. The wearing of moccasins in early America, even in larger towns/cities, was as ubiquitous as sneakers today apparently. of course it doesn’t mention the pattern and I wonder if for cobblestones, etc. they would’ve added a sole (unlike the eastern woodlands pattern I use).
