Another important piece from the Connecticut Historical Society. Shirt worn by Colonel William Ledyard who was killed with his own sword upon surrendering Fort Griswold on 6 September 1781. Interesting physical note: the center front below the opening has a piece of heavier linen sewn in, either as a working life replacement/repair or pieced in at the time it was made. This is one of the reasons many shirts are difficult to date accurately. Many surviving examples show evidence of being altered at some point. Because of their value, shirts were kept in service as long as possible.
