Over a lot of years I spent time in antique malls, estate auctions, etc., and kept an eye out for old iron tools. I accumulated a few. Here are photos of some of them for those with an interest. Spence

I haven't used any of them.
I particularly like the two adzes, they are a bit unusual. They aren't regular carpenters adzes, they are shipwright adzes, otherwise known as a peg-poll adze.

Spence Fantastic stuff. I'd be interested to know how two shipwright's adzes and your sailmaker's bench came to be found so far inland.

I don't really know about the adzes, I just bought them locally. and the nearest water is the Ohio river. I can make a guess about the bench, but can't back it up. I bought that from my old friend Jack, he of the Buchele rifle, and he was quite a serious dabbler in antiques. I know he made more than one buying trip to New England, and I think it's possible he brought that bench home from there.

Please pardon my ignorance. But, do you know the purpose of that crazy looking arched hammer?

That's just a short handled adze, called a hand adze. They are used in several crafts, and named appropriate to their use. A bowl adze is one of those. That one of mine may be a coopers adze, used in making barrels, etc.
