One of my favorite spring time edibles, the simple but often overlooked stinging nettle until one happens to venture upon a patch! The common nettle or wood nettle is a wonderful plant packed full of nutrients and very delicious cooked into pottage soups, stews or cooked and eaten alone with a little butter, spices and salt. My favorite use for this wonderful plant is drying and using the leaves for tea, add a little honey and one has a delicious, healthy relaxing drink for around the fire.

I like the taste of nettle, though I have never drank it as a tea. The only tea I made was for fertilizer for the garden. I must try it sometime. Thanks for this post. Keith.

Has anyone tried to make cordage from Nettles? I've made very rough twine to demonstrate the concept, but using green Nettle stems rather than extracting the fibers.

I have, extremely strong but tedious. I've found actually soaking the stems before extracting the innermost fibers helps to soften things up which makes the entire process easier.

Yup. A friend and I did it. Retting is neccessary. Whole thing is a pain in the..... Makes me wonder when people started buying factory made twine, string, and rope? I am betting it was one of the 1st things people said, "I can make that myself, but, screw it I'm buying it from now on," to.

It's a good skill to have, however being so tedious I like buying hemp cordage! I would say certainly give it a go. It's one of those tasks similar to making a sinew bowstring, done it but won't do it again!
