Finger woven from wool, I made these many years ago. Keith.

One of the only images I have of one set. Brain tan backing with red wool sewn on the outside with linen, then beaded and adorned with tin deer tail cones. Simple brain tan thongs with tin cone ends as well.

By comparison, mine are rather plain: Wool blanketing with leather ends, trimmed with blue & white beads.

I usually wear simple leather strips for garters, but I did make a woven pair many years ago. In dabbling with the skills of the old boys I fooled around with weaving for a bit. Great fun, and very instructive. Just warping the loom was an education in itself. I wove a sash and garters from scrap wool yarn my wife had, and they have worked very well over the years. Spence

What a bunch of chatterboxes you are. Well, old topics are better than none. Backwoodsmen of the rougher type, NA emulators and longhunters wearing leggings weren't the only men wearing garters in 18th century. More 'posh and civilized' men did, too. One type was a narrow leather strap with buckle worn just below the knee to help keep the stockings up. I wear those occasionally. The Pennsylvania Gazette May 20, 1756 Just imported from London, in the Carolina, Capt. Mesnard, ....3 qr. 7 eights and yard wide garlix, FF gun powder, ditto superfine double strong, broad and narrow silk knee garters, The Pennsylvania Gazette February 11, 1762 STOLEN in the Night of the 4th Instant, .... a coarse blue twilled Jacket, about half worn, with Brass Buttons, and a Pair of new red and blue Garters, with the Subscriber’s Name at large Wove in them. The South-Carolina GAZETTE January 22, 1763 THE subscriber informs her friends, that she is moved to Charles-Town, next door to Mr. Killeart in King-street, where she intends to keep a Vicutalling-House, and will take in lodgers and boarders, and washing by the quarter: Those who please to favour her with their custom may depend upon being used, by MARY PERREY, N.B. She continues to weave garters, for gentlemen or ladies, as usual, with their names, or any posy* on them. *A posy is "a short motto or line of verse inscribed inside a ring." Sometimes the garters were worn above the knee, on the breeches.
The Pennsylvania Gazette May 13, 1762 Had on, and took with him, when he went away, A brown Broadcloth Coat, with White metal Buttons, white Flannel Jacket, black Everlasting Breeches, with Plaid Garters tying them at the Knees, white ribbed Stockings, good Shoes, with Steel Buckles,

I may be a little redundant but here's one of each from my three sets of wool garters. I do plan on making some leather ones as well although I'm not a fan of bead work myself.

I lean towards keeping things as simple as possible without much in the way of decoration, and use simple 1" black cotton twill tape tied in a bow.
Townsend sells small garter buckles that I've been thinking of buying to use to spiff up my twill tape...
