Today is/was National Medal of Honor Day. Did anyone else pay tribute in any way? Anyone else have a recipient in the family or as a friend? I fall in both camps. A friend and an acquaintance awarded the Medal posthumously in the GWOT and a great uncle who received the award from President Truman for actions in WWII. For Uncle Jim, www.instagram.com/reel/CqNqe2PpG2u/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=www.cmohs.org/recipients/james-m-burtI also had the privilege of a few great conversations with recipient Sammy Davis. Anyone else?

My 3rd great grand uncle, James B Thompson, earned the MOH at Gettysburg. I had the privilege of serving with Master Chief Petty Officer Britt Slabinski. We deployed in the same task unit in Jalalabad, AFG in 2008, where I served as air and fires officer.

What a difference in how citations are written now. Some men need to wear a hooded sweatshirt upside-down and backwards just to carry their balls....

My Great Grandfather, James Snowden McElroy, 61st PA Vols. captured a Confederare battle flag (I believe it was also at Gettysburg). A General, whose name escapes me, rode up and said:"What have you got there, soldier?" When the flag was handed up to him to look at, he made some comment of approval, and rode off...with the flag! There went the Medal of Honor.
