Who can tell me when cutler rivets were first used?

Yes, compression rivets. I'm just curious when they began to be used attaching knife scales. I assume fairly late in the 19th century...?

OK, Spence.
Different places state they weren't commonly used until after the Civil War and others put it in the 1890's.
The first rivet making machine (for iron rivets) wasn't made until 1836. I couldn't find a date for brass rivets, but those machines came much later.
Calipers that could read to a thousandth of an inch were not affordable and somewhat available until the 1840's.
Twist drill bits were not invented before 1848.
So it's pretty clear we can forget them for the era of most folks on the forum.

FWIW, though, rivets and burr's (washers) were first made in Roman Times and commonly used from at least the latter part of the 17th century for certain types of reinforcement in leather products.
