Correct me if I'm wrong. You are forging all of these of one piece of steel, not forge welding in a bit of harder steel into a head of mild steel or iron. Correct?

Correct? Correct. The folded over and forge welded steel bit / iron bar type of construction found on many period trade axes does not seem to have been used on most of the original spiked axes I have observed. Occasionally I have seen them like that where the spike was forge welded on later, but they definitely seem to be in the minority.
