Excellent, lenape. Grouse with a flintlock fowler...I don't think it can get any better than that. Color me a dark shade of envious green.

Very good my friend. I only wish there were like minded people in my part of the world.
What was your load for this hunt?
We don't have grouse in Australia, how would you describe their eating qualities?

Excellent stuff there J. I greatly enjoy you accounts of your period adventures.
Bushfire.... Ruffed Grouse, or pah-tridge as they are known in Northern New England, are excellent eating. I like them a lot better than pheasant, a lot more flavor. Unfortunately populations here are way down the past 10 or 15 years, maybe more. I've gone several years at times without seeing even one. I like to stuff them with grapes or apples and chopped walnuts, rub the outside with bacon fat, and roast them in the oven. Don't get to do much campfire cooking anymore.

Thanks gents, Bushfire my load was the same as I use for turkey hunting, which was way overkill, but worked, it was around 75 grains, an over powder card, a thick fiber wad, 1 7/8 oz of 7 & 8 mix shot, and bees nest tamped down over the shot.
The grouse was very similar to chicken breast, very good, also reminded me of wild turkey breast.

But we do have quail in Australia Bushfire, I have often seen them in our forest which is in the New England area of NSW. Regards, Keith.

In Vic we get button and brown quail in the bush, both protected. I used to do a bit of stubble quail on farmland but since becoming an agronomist it makes me ill at the amount of chemical they're exposed to.
