I always do it,,, though I've never had the load move before....
I had a 1st for me yesterday though. I didn't really have time for a true evening hunt aferwork, but I haven't been getting out, and the last few times revealed no fresh sign and not much on the game cams, so it has been extra hard to motivate on a cold morning. I decided to walk a big loop keeping the wind in my face or across my path after work to check all my trail cams in this particular forest that is on my way home.
I set my gun on the tailgate as I got my orange on and my bags ready (not a period outing). The gun had been previously charged and a ball of lubed patches plugged the muzzle. Once ready I pulled the plug, which came out with a great deal more difficulty than usual, and set off.
When I stepped into the edge of the woods I pulled my ramrod and dropped it down the bore... Much to my surprise it stopped a little over halfway down with a hollow cardboard sound. The sound told me it was the overshot card/s ove the ball that had moves up the bore. I pushed them back atop the ball and continued on with my mission.
While no shot opportunities came my way, I'm glad I checked. I don't think the situation dangerous, but with so little game activity lately if I had a chance I do think this could have resulted in great disappointment.
As I suspected, all 4 cameras revealed that since the second week of November all deer activity,,, and there hasn't been much,,,, has been in the dark at night. There hadn't been much going on night or day for much of October.
The onky daytime activity was a series of very nice fox pictures and a whole bunch of pics of the same group of off leash little pest dogs that have been an increasing nuisance for a few years. I'm tempted to try to pay the guy "walking" them to use different trail from August to Jan. 1st next year 🙄
So, don't forget to check that load if it has been sitting in the gun.
