This axe was a commission from an Ottawa gentleman in Michigan. It is based on an original dug by Bob Bennett at an Ottawa site in Northern MI. I scaled it up significantly at the customer's request (he is 6'1, 280 lb and didn't want it to look small in his hands) The head measures 11" long with a 2.25" bit hafted in 22" of hand scraped hickory, forge blackened and treated with a mixture of bear grease and beeswax.

That is awesome. Great forge work, I love the flow of the shape,, and really like that handle treatment.
What were the dimensions of the original if you don't mind?

I contacted Bob Bennett (who dug the original) to get dimensions, but he couldn't remember. Using his hand as a reference in pics of the original, my best guess is that it was around 7" overall. I found the challenge in this one was scaling up the dimensions while maintaining the overall proportions and "flow."

Well I think you nailed it. It looks excellent and hopefully the Ottawa gent appreciates the care that went into its creation.

Very... spikey! Well done as usual proportionally pleasing. Utterly devastating piece in combat. Absolutely cannot imagine having such a weapon coming my way!

But will it split kindling, carve a spoon, fell an oak, hollow a canoe…
