Some weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend at Fort Ticonderoga with Ryan. While there, I saw this carpenter's hatchet in the museum. I felt compelled to copy it. The head measures 5" long with a 3" bit and is forged - like the original - entirely of wrought iron. This was apparently a pattern piece, as several others identical (or nearly so) have turned up dating to the 1750s-60s, including one with a complete 20" haft found aboard the wreck of HMS Boscawen in Lake Champlain very near the fort. The original also bears the British broad arrow ordnance mark. I hafted my copy in 20" hickory based on the Boscawen find. The first 2 pics are of the original.

Wow. You did a fabulous job. At 1st glance I would have thought you touched up the chipped edge of the original. Thank you for sharing.
