Thank you for the link. A good little read though much of it later than my interest. This stood out as odd to me, "-he has a common case knife ground in the shape of a butcher knife attached to his pouch by a leather string through the handle. -The Charlotte journal. [volume], August 11, 1842
This knife and murder Ad are pretty unique in that the case knife is carried folded...."
First off the journal article says nothing about the knife being folded. And, moreover, I never thought of period "cade knives" as folders, but fixed dining utensils cased with a fork and/or spoon. Is the author confusing the case knife in the journal article with the more modern Case brand of knives?

I personally have never bought into the idea of a tiny knife dedicated to cutting patches. Bag or bag strap mounting was clearly done, I just personally don't like it having tried it in a few positions. Unusually enough, I generally like knives smaller than most period fixed blade knives for most tasks, I don't need a 5" or larger knife to take care of a deer, 2" and razor sharp is better. But, for cutting patches at the muzzle, I have found advantage to a longer blade, still razor sharp, in that the patch can be cut with minimal force and no "sawing" back and forth. One clean, easy, pass of the blade.

A belt knife and a folding knife in my bag with each knife having its own applications. I can't see having a specific knife for a single specific purpose. In my opinion, I see the patch knife as a Buckskinner-ism...

Now if someone could just tackle "neck knives" on English colonists... Or full-blown native "war shirts" on pasty white "mountain men" (read Buckskinners)...
