This one is based upon an original 18th c. spontoon tomahawk with purported Huron / Wendat provenance. Like the original (last picture), the head is approximately 8" long, hand forged entirely of wrought iron, with a wrapped, forge-welded eye. My version sports an 18" fire-hardened ash haft.

I think you need to get a hobby that gets you away from the computer.... Nicely done! I've always thought spontoon hawks looked awkward and was concerned about their "stability" in use.

You may be right.😔 Yes, I think your concerns are founded from a practical standpoint. That said, I think the stability issue is mitigated by the fact that I believe these were meant to target soft tissue: less chance for a glancing blow than, say, an axe bit to the skull. It's more like a dagger with a handle than an axe.

I've often thought the same thing about practical stability in use for these and other similar period tools/weapons. Many of the tools I see that have a handle 90° to the "working" partner the tool, such as these and some hammers or the hammer poll on some axes and tomahawks, seem awkwardly long in relation to the handle length.

For lack of a better term, these look "floppy" with all the practicality/stability of trying to stab someone with a live trout...

A shock and awe weapon of it's day meant partly as show and to intimidate?
