I don’t like cold feet. Who does? In the very cold winter of 1779 on the Kentucky frontier, Daniel Trabue wrote…."We made socks to go over our shews with Buffelo skins puting the wool inside and we had woolen gloves...." That sounded like a good idea. I didn’t have buffalo, but I found a mouton coat at the thrift store which worked well enough. I made a pair of regular center seam moccasins big enough to fit over my summer elk hide ones, wool inside. Sheepskin is not all that tough, so I wound up putting an extra sole on them. With good wool socks inside my summer moccasins, then these sheepskin ones over those with the flaps of both folded up and wrapped snuggly around my lower leg, I’m read for some chilly weather. They didn’t turn out to be too bulky, either, and are easy to get around in. Spence

I made a set of sheep-skin winter moccasin liners with wool blanket uppers. They worked great, but the leather wasn't very tough and my feet smelled like a wet sheep after wearing them for a while.
The key to warm feet is not cramming too much inside moccasins and restricting circulation. Keeping your feet dry is also important, but not always possible - having a second dry pair of warm moccasins & wool socks in your pack or bedroll makes a huge difference. I will change into the dry pair at night and dry the damp liners (as much as possible) inside the blankets or by the fire for daytime use (damp feet won't let me sleep). Also - if you wear leg-ties or garters, loosen or remove them at night...

What is it that they say about great minds? Paranger, Any chance we can get you to show us some more detailed pics of those specimens of yours? I like the pucked seam on the instep.

I am away grom home this week, but can post some more pics when I get home if you like. I should hasten to add that I did not make this particular pair, though I have made simpler center-seam mocs in the past.

That would be fine, whenever you get the chance. I'm curious as to their construction. They do look a bit like Hand's pair !!
