I have to say, this surely seems to be a quiet bunch. Sort of a discussion group without discussion.
Reminds me what Gregory Peck, as Sam Varner in The Stalking Moon, said, “I’ve got nothing against talking. I don’t mind a little talking now and then.”

True. I think it can be the problem with us all thinking somewhat alike. Nothing to argue about. It's also a young new forum, still small, as it grows, and hopefully it will grow with folks new to the hobby looking to learn the right way, the discussion will get more lively.

I have to be honest, the last thing I am is a shy person but I must admit I feel a little shy about saying something ignorant whether it be about the history or about projects. I got involved in the forums to expand my knowledge by listening, " "lest my tongue makes me deaf" as HawkEyes so aptly puts it in his signature. Sometimes when I go back far enough and read some of my original posts, I feel like a jerk! LOL I knew so little about how little I knew!! Slowly I listened and learned. From a guy returning to the life style I still make mistakes I guess I probably shouldn't and sometimes I make them willingly. The way I look at it is that it is all a learning experience so if I buy a drop forged tomahawk and dress it up a bit, NO it will never be hand forged, NO it will not have been made by me in my backyard forge that my GrandDad built but HELL I learned something doing so and I'll pass that tomahawk onto somebody else who is trying to get into the craft. I may even give it as a gift because I can identify with someone who is trying to advance in the craft. Believe You/Me I kick myself every time I bring the Fusil I bought from Veteran Arms to my shoulder but I have to make good on my poor decision. I will turn it into my whetstone for gun building and do what I can to make lemonade out of lemons. I should've saved more money, I should've been more patient I should've done more research...shoulda', coulda', woulda'. I enjoy you Men, I enjoy your knowledge, your experiences and that you share them. I want to share more than I do but I don't feel like I have anything valuable...yet I'm not looking for sympathy as much as I'm saying I don't have anything to offer you haven't already seen or heard.

Sometimes, good friends don't need to say much. And when something comes to mind, the conversation gets lively....

I'm kind of shy! With some things! Well, I take that back. I'm shy when I don't need/want to be, but than I'm not shy when I should be. (Is there ever a need to be shy?)
Sicilianhunter, I feel the same way though on being ignorant.

I think things will pick up in this regards once we get some Pilgrims on board. As far as being shy to ask because of ignorance, well we all had to start somewhere, we were definitely not born with the knowledge we have now. I don't know about anyone else on here, but in the early days I was often guilty of taking all information as gospel & passing it on!!! On more than one occasion I fell foul of information from well known people in living history! Once these mistakes came to light, I started doing my own research with a vengeance, & practicing experimental archaeology to make sure something actually did work!
So don't be shy, I myself still have a lot to learn I am sure, & it never stops from the day you are born to the day you go under. Keith.

OK,maybe "shy" wasn't the most expressive word I could've used but I definitely have a lot more to learn and experience than most of the others on this forum such as yourself. I have learned to choose my questions and wording so as not to come across as glib as I may have been in the past. I'm grateful to all of those that have taken the time to reply and in your case, go as far as to reply with a video response. My thought is that if I ask the questions and get some valuable answers then as Spence once said to me, "the information belongs to us all" and that is a good feeling to a Noob. I certainly, will always be a Pilgrim...

Ahh..see, we can talk, with a little incentive. I'm a fan of the historical novels of Patrick O'Brian. In one of them he had his character Stephen Maturin say something which has always stuck with me...I think it's very well said, and true. “Dr [Samuel] Johnson said that every meeting or every conversation was a contest in which the man of superior parts was the victor. But I think he was mistaken: for that is surely wrangling or hostile debate, often self-defeating-- it is not conversation as I understand it at all, a calm, amicable interchange of opinions, news, information, reflexions, without striving for superiority.” Stephen Maturin, The Thirteen Gun Salute Spence

Thanks!! An excellent quote. Equals don't need to waste time proving how superior they are when sharing is a more important exchange between them.

I guess I have to fall in somewhere in the area of Sicilianhunter and ShotDeer. I don't always feel I have a lot to offer in the way of information when amidst some of the members here (and elswhere) that have been at this longer, and, more importantly, have been dedicated to historical correctness longer. When I 1st started perusing these forums (anyone remember the "Muzzle Loading Life forum"?) I didn't know much about people doing things the way Spence and Keith do them, and didn't really care about hc/pc. Things change. Even when I do feel I have the info needed, I've not gotten to a position wherein I can post accurate documentation of where and how I got the info. So, I try to ask good questions. I try to offer info or commentary to further the discussion in order to learn more, and, someday, be able to "pass the torch."
Thanks for starting this discussion Spence. I wish I could share a campfire with you and most of the others here,,,,, and probably just do a lot of listening.

Something for "Pilgrims", in any endeavor, to keep in mind is that one only gets better at something playing with those better (more knowledgeable) than you. Whether it was when I played music for a living, or transitioning my combative pistol skills to practical pistol competition, I got better by playing with those better than me. Playing with equals doesn't present the opportunity to learn, not the motivation to challenge oneself to learn more and advance.
Conversing here with the likes of Black Hand, Spence, Keith, LRB, Hawkeyes, and others, is my "playing" with folks better than me, in this field.

We ALL have a contribution to make, regardless of our level of experience. None of us is better than any other as we all bring something different to the conversation. The more we discuss, the more we all learn. The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked.

Nock, You make excellent points and I've been told things like"study your betters" and "Never ask another white belt a question about technique" BUT!!! I would not put yourself in the same category as me. You, on other forums and soon on this one, have/will offered far more in the way of historical examples and quotations than I ever have! On top of that you presented a VERY detailed tutorial on making shot cartridges that has yet to be matched. This shows, to me at least, that you care enough about the craft to pass knowledge you earned to others without attitude or hubris. Don't forget that and don't group yourself with Sicilians...it leads to no good!! BTW, when I was making up your shot cartridges around the fire at Moon of the Crow people would come up and ask, "Where did you learn that?" "BrokenNock" I'd say. "Where's he camped at" "Back east.." says I. "Oh...can I get some to try at the Mountain man Run?" Your reputation precedes you...
