I agree with you B.H.
"Better" in this case simply refers to those who have been at this longer, and dedicated to the right way and correct history, longer, having acquired more information of better quality.
Often it is the question/s of the new and interested that generates the conversations that lead to the most discovery for all of us.

My mother's half of the family lives in Sciacca, on the southern coast of Sicily. I come by my determination (some might say stubbornness) honestly...

Let's start a list of questions - if you don't want to post under your own name, send them to me and I will post the list. Doesn't matter how silly or insignificant you might think they are, if it is something you've wondered about, a skill you want to learn, something you want to make/buy and aren't certain whether is it is useful, other....
We all have something to offer - I started this place so we could have a place to discuss things without it being diluted by people who don't care and hijack the conversation to convince others they shouldn't care either.

Ahh..see, we can talk, with a little incentive. I'm a fan of the historical novels of Patrick O'Brian. In one of them he had his character Stephen Maturin say something which has always stuck with me...I think it's very well said, and true. “Dr [Samuel] Johnson said that every meeting or every conversation was a contest in which the man of superior parts was the victor. But I think he was mistaken: for that is surely wrangling or hostile debate, often self-defeating-- it is not conversation as I understand it at all, a calm, amicable interchange of opinions, news, information, reflexions, without striving for superiority.” Stephen Maturin, The Thirteen Gun Salute Spence Or, as the spurious claim made on another forum alleges, I/we are trying to create a utopia where everyone agrees with everyone else?!?! This is as ignorant a comment as I've ever heard. If you put 2 people in a room, there will be at least 3 different opinions on any subject - disagreement is part of life and is something that can spur us to learn (at least some of us). I have never shied from disagreement and even people with which I've vehemently disagreed have taught me something...

Good idea about the list of questions. A separate thread? Here, or the library, or maybe under mentoring?

As we are discussing things over an ale, perhaps the Tavern would be a good place for it. I can certainly move it at a later date if needed....

I guess there is am element of this idea of dilution and folks trying to convince people who aren't on either side of the hc/pc fence that they shouldn't care, in why I keep fighting and annoying folks over on the MLF.

They may have hauled in the same nets!! My family were land-owners and grew grapes, oranges, olives and almonds (have you ever eaten a ripe almond off the tree or a Sicilian orange?). My Uncle's wife's family were fishermen.

I love Sicilian Blood Oranges !! I've never eaten one while standing in a Sicilian grove though! My GrandParents were share croppers before my GrandFather headed to the US to make his fortune which started at Ellis Island, took him to the coal mines of Wilksbarre, PA and then back to Manhattan and finally Brooklyn. My GrandMother's people were fisherman

Went to visit the family with the lady of the house a couple of Christmases ago (she had never been out of the USA). We arrived after dark in Palermo and drove to Sciacca (about 1.5 hours) - the next morning, we walked into the orange grove just steps from the front door and ate an orange off the tree.
