Looks neat. I know I'd lose all of the stuff that attaches to it. I don't know if I'd order one, although if it was on a blanket with a downward adjusted price, holding it in my hand would probably cause a hole to burn it's way through my wallet. SH, this one is for you when you decide you want a Charlottesville instead of a British type powder burner... It's the perfect tool to use with it! ;-0 www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/62/1/TOOL-COMBO

You could use the excuse that it would function as a button-hole cutter... The one I made for the Lady's sewing box.

I hadn't thought of using it that way. Is the edge roughly 5/8ths or possibly larger? If it is, I might get one instead of the old wood chisel I've been using.

(Lightbulb moment)
After thinking about using something other than an old woodchisel, the idea of reshaping a junker wooden spade drill bit into something very similar to what you've shown occurred to me.
I can make several, put period looking handles on them, and save the chisels for what they were intended for. Thanks for posting the image!

Here is a 17th century German one. I think this may be the combination with pliers like the one below. Keith.

The one shown is made from a piece of 1/4" rod and the blade width is 1/2". Bad things happen when I get bored... The rest of the kit:

BH...nice kit.
You could mark a scale on the box to reduce bulk and free up some space inside for her. Once you do that, make a small roll of unmarked paper tape about 2 yards long and anywhere between 1/2 - 1" wide or so. That extra space...there's another use for it.
During the 18th century, tailors didn't rely on marked rules for taking measurements. They used the roll of blank paper stripping as a "memory stick" by placing an end, or marked spot on the tape and stretched it around chests, waists, along arms, etc, and made notations of what marks were related, and how. The tape measure is a 19th century device, however you can see where the idea came from. The "memory stick" method was used in woodworking and similar trades during the era, and gets around the use of a ruler. String or thread can also be used for the same purpose, however, the rolled/coiled paper strip can be kept for re-use (on the other-side) or to make additional items to fit the same measurements.
Harbor Freight sells 6" scissors of the same type you show in the photo. They run about $5 without a 20% off coupon, and are cheaper there than some of the vendors sell them for. You can get her a spare pair if those dull out. A small leather sheath for the two forks of the scissors are good to make next time you get bored, because they prevent getting stabbed if you forget where they are and get the wrong end by accident.

All sensible advise. Here's the catch - she doesn't really sew that much...yet. Another evil plan of mine to spur interest.

Okay, I don't mind being the dumb one (pork brains) here. What is the stained wood item in the bottom right of the picture?
