I take my design from a article written by Jim Melchor and Tom Newbern called: Hunting Bags and Shooting Accessories in Virginia & North Carolina, A Pictorial Mini-book in 3 Parts Unfortunately it's a PDF and I can't for the life of me figure out how to post a link or copy so I do apologize as it's a great little article with original 18th and early 19th century bags and accoutrements. I'll continue in my efforts of trying to get a link posted, however I'll screen shot some images of my bags inspiration. This particular bag is to accompany my .58 smooth rifle that is in progress. With each rifle I build they always have their dedicated horn and bag. This piece is made from moose hide and is a simple double pocket design that is unlined. Most period examples I've came across were never lined, and if they were it's likely they have been worn. Hand sewn with linen along with a leather strap, forged buckle and a pewter button to finish it off. Nothing particularly fancy at all, just a nice sturdy shooting bag. I still have yet to construct the horn outside of stripping and polishing. Has a beautiful light honey amber color that will be excellent for scrimshaw work. Horn will be affixed in a similar fashion as the originals. Hope you gents find this useful, very much need to figure out how to get this article posted!

I've seen that article and pdf. If I can find it again I'll post it. Did you line that sheath with rawhide or anything?

Ah. So you can hang the bag and still tuck the center seam sheath in your sash or belt and still have your knife without the bag. Good idea.
