My favorite squirrel shooter is a .30 caliber flintlock rifle I've had for many years. It is a very slim, almost delicate little gun, absolutely ideal for the job. Because it eats so little powder even when "heavily" loaded, I bought a small powder horn to go with it. I carry it on a separate strap, along with a simple pigskin single-pocket pouch, and it is perfect in the kit. It's only 8 1/2" around the curve, 1 1/2" in diameter at the butt, but could hold far more than enough powder for a long, busy hunt. Walnut butt plug and stopper, wooden pegs. Someone did a nice job of folk-style scrimshaw on it, and I've enjoyed using it over the years. Spence

Very nice little horn, is the base plug pegged with walnut pins? Walnut is one of my true favorites.

Can't say for certain, they are too small to see any details, but they are the right color, so it's possible.
The base plug is a bit unusual, it's not circular. The builder fit the plug to the shape of the horn, not the horn to a circular plug.

The builder fit the plug to the shape of the horn, not the horn to a circular plug. Spence I've done that on a few horns which ends up being more work versus shaping the horn to a circular shape in oil. My current horn in progress is relatively circular so I may fit the plug by hand.
