After donating blood today, left work early a quart low along with two IV needle marks and bandages on both arms... Most would go home a rest, however not me. Hit the forest for a relaxing afternoon trek which was good for the soul as the forest is my heaven on earth. Wonderful shagbark hickory, they grow slow and this old growth beauty just toward above the forest with a presence. Then a beautiful massive black walnut, my favorite! Then... my harvest of the day! Unfortunately another beautiful walnut that I came across, apparent it was struck by lightning. Having a wood hoarding problem I wasn't about to walk away. I always carry a haversack with my frame saw for quick treks and this very reason. A quart low on blood and two bruised arms (girl had to learn the ole needle stick...) I went to town cutting alway. Lashed and dragged my harvest about 3/4 of a mile to the vehicle. A darn good way to end the afternoon! Plastered on the sofa now gents!

Good score. Sounds like a wonderful day afield. Those shagbark hickorys are some of the best whitewood bow wood you can get. Not sure why but, all else being equal, if you build 2 identical bows of hickory, one being shagbark and the other some other hickory, the shagbark will outperform the other. My hunting buddy and I scored big on hickory nuts on a scout Sunday, then left them behind when we came upon the motherlode of butternuts.

I miss the forest and the breath of the trees on my face!! Shagbark was everywhere in the woods around where I lived in Upstate NY before I moved, now I live in a desert that is reminiscent of Tatooine....

When I was stationed down in Texas for a bit it literally made me homesick for the forest, couldn't stand it. Also was at Luke AFB for some time and while the terrain was beautiful in it's own right, still longed for my Eastern woodlands something fierce.

I joke with the desert rats here : "Where I come from we have little things like trees and water..."

I was only in the desert for 12 months, but I was glad to get out of there. I rarely leave my forest these days. Keith.
