Does anyone have a good description of making period snow shoes? Well written with good diagrams and a solid list of materials and tools needed? I'd prefer something written and photographed or drawn to a YouTube video. YouTube is like a rabbit hole of time.
Get on to watch a quick video on how to do or fix something, hours later I've missed lunch, late for work, project untouched/unfinished. Hours/day gone by clicking associated video links. Or a 3 minute installation/repair turned into a half hour video of b.s. Sorry,,,,, my question stands.
Thanks, Dave

There is also a site that sells spools of rawhide lacing in different sizes. I should have the link saved in my computer.

Thank you gentlemen. I wish I could make a period argument for crosscountry skis, already have a lot of time on them. I have a set of webbed magnesium frame g.i. snowshoes, haven't gotten to use them much. Can't afford current production wood ones. There seem to be many colonial references to snowshoes and iceskates so snowshoes seem a worthy project.

Can't afford current production wood ones. If you aren't set on building your own, there seem to be several on Ebay, traditional wooden frame, for reasonable prices. With shipping most of them top our at less than $75. Spence

Thank you Spence. I'd like to buy a pair to use while I try to make a pair. Will have to look more into the Ebay angle next paycheck.

I have a pair, if you get into making some I would be glad to take enlarged pictures of any details you are interested in.

A friend made a set from bent birch (boiled) and deer rawhide. Functional but period and no modern materials used.

Thanks Spence and B.H. I'd be looking to make something like what was being worn at "the battle on snow shoes," and other colonial New England scouts and skirmishes.

With snowshoes, there are many styles and forms adapted to regional snow conditions.
