Over bare legs or stockings, but they have a thong or strap that runs from the side seam to a belt/thong tied about the waist. A garter at the knee helps them stay up and not pull on the waist belt/ thong. Can be seen in a picture of my basic outfit, page 1 of minuteman.boards.net/thread/109/knee-breeches?page=1

The portraits they sat for on that trip are much more telling." and straekat said: "The 1762 engraving is believed to be largely copied after the fact from ca. 1710 portraits of the Mohawk "kings" by Jan Veresldt as commissioned by Queen Anne." Then why does the British Museum say it was done 1762 and sold in Covent Garden in the day in the manner prescribed by law? research.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=3239926&partId=1I am able to find the portraits they sat for by Joshua Reynolds for only two of the chiefs, both are busts, no legs included. Where can I find the official portraits with legs? Spence

If you look at the 1710 Mohawk portraits you can tell that the 62 engraving was copied. Note the early split shirts or longer bosom slits. I'd bet a dollar that the engraver never saw or met the Timberlake Cherokee delegation. You can't find their legs in the bust because they are busts. The 1710 images were full body as I recall. There are one or two more accurate engravings that clearly show them wearing side seam leggings. If you want you could always disregard that and interpret what was in the French newspaper, a plate featuring Cherokee with turbans, beards, and Turkish swords. AP stock photos used for articles isn't anything unique to our time.

Hawkeyes, Are you saying you just slip those on over your stockings and/or bare legs? You don't need to fasten, lace or anything? Is the "cuff" at top a separate piece sewn on? Bare legs and I run a small leather thong up to the piece that holds my clout and simply tie them to that. They essentially are a leather tube fitted to the profile of your leg, simple! I sew mine with a heavy linen thread, stay away from the imitation sinew.
