Will ironing it work to flatten it? Will this add a weird smoothness to the felt that won't look right? Based on my experience with a couple of cheap felt blanks I believe ironing will flatten it. You might want to put a thin piece of cloth, cotton sheet or such, over the part you are ironing, the heat will still flatten, but won't make it shiny, I think. Spence Interesting. That is just what I had just finished doing when I saw your post. I ever so slightly dampened an old linen dish towel and used that between the iron and the felt. I ironed both top and bottom. Now far less warp, much flatter.

Just about finished. Need a better way to attach the temporary band. Then, a better, more permanent band. I would like to add some weather proofing finish to it as it is not best quality fur felt. I have read of using shellac, with the stress on using "real" shellac. Not sure where to look for it or what I am looking for to know it is real.
Forgot to take a good "before" picture, I put the piece I cut off back around for the picture, This shows the space gauge I made to maintain an even distance all around the crown to cut the brim, a hole was drilled just big enough to let the tip of a "metallic" sharpie marker through, I estimated how wide I wanted the brim and cut the wood off that far from the center of the hole, used a half round file to slightly dish the end that would go against the crown, spacer against cut off edge Post cut proportions. Hoping edge binding and hat band changes look of proportions, I'm thinking I could go more narrow, but don't want to cut too far....

Edge binding is a tedious task, the tiny binder clips I've been using to hold leather together or clip templates to things, came in very handy. Used cotton "tape," linen thread, and a nice new sharp glover's needle.
I truly prefer working with leather and a saddle stitch, can't forget my often used coffee stirrer stitch spacing gauge, visible in the lower left
Finished?
well, just about. Would like a better band, and, for now, a neater way to finish off attaching this one.
Things did not go well, finishing off the end of the binding. I had planned to fold the end under itself and slightly overlap the end where I started. The thickness of the fold and overlap would not allow the needle to go far enough past the edge of the felt to get a purchase on the tape and the felt brim.
