Continuing on the effigy theme: this time an ebony raven on a medium English scalper. The raven (or "Kalona") seems to hold a prominent place in Cherokee lore (and perhaps other tribes as well - I am simply most familiar with the Cherokee). The "Raven Mocker" is a dark spirit that attempts to steal the souls of the dead and dying. Conversely, Kalona, or raven, is also a title or rank of distinction for a Cherokee warrior. According to James Adair, there was a hierarchy which he loosely equated to European military rank: "gunman" at the bottom, followed by "slave-catcher," "raven," "man-killer," and "great man" or "great warrior" in ascending order of distinction.

A blade of the principle people, nicely done.
Adnek in Anishinaabe is much different. It is said he was born without purpose, but he later learned his purpose was to help others find their belonging and meaning in life. Very interesting and different beliefs. Love the old and differing stories from all tribes.

Despite the fact that Ravens steal our duck eggs, I have great respect for them as a Raven once saved me from a snake. Love the knife. Keith.
