With my wife’s help I’m going to try my hand at my first pair of britches.
Question: I making them out of linen. Was hoping to make them unlined. Were they always lined? If so, what was the most common lining material used?

They're not always lined. Use depending, white, brown linen (osnabrig), or nankeen cotton is best for unlined as these are cool and washable. Leather isn't very washable but usually unlined and always a great choice. Dyed fabrics just wouldn't hold up to washing in the 18th c but you can make them out of pretty much everything.
Common breeches typically didnt last to become extant examples, yet of CW's collection, most are nankeen having provenance to VA. Deserter adds also frequently mention leather breeches, indicating them being common to the average enlistee.
Honestly I'd make them out of whatever you want linen-wise, lining with linen only.

My linen breeches are unlined, and I like them that way for cooler 3 season wear. I have lined (with linen) wool breeches that I like for colder weather and elk hide leather breeches which are very durable, but truthfully not especially warm in the winter or cool in the summer. All are perfectly pc options, however.

Good points above, I for one am somewhat newer to the breeches game and both my pairs are unlined linen, very comfortable.
