I don’t know why didn’t think of it before but I’m thinking of bringing my Dutch oven to an event this coming weekend.
Would like to make some easy recipe that I can pre-mix at home and then just bring in to pour into the Dutch oven Saturday.
For example, something simple like Charlie bread, I pre-mix the batter into a 1 gallon bag and then just snip a corner to create a pour spout.
Any of you guys made a simple period meal like this? It’s for a family of four; my wife and I and our twin teenage sons.

How concerned were you with authenticity?

How concerned were you with authenticity? Hoping to make some thing that would be historically correct to a certain extent. I do think I might have some venison left from last season but I’d be willing to use chicken or beef. Definitely will be our main dish. As a fallback I can make Charlie bread: a recipe I picked up from the Civ War crowd back in the day. basically kind of like corn bread or spoon bread.

Armando, I’d like the recipe for Charlie bread if you can scare it up. This looks super easy and is something you can make before hand, freeze it or just keep it in your cooler and heat up in your Dutch oven when you’re ready. youtu.be/PjoUKQ4inGc

Any kind of stew. Through dollops of biscuit batter on top toward the end of cooking time to form a "crust" on top.

I might screw up that coal count...

I think this baked up more like what some call "spoon bread," in that it is served by the spoonful, rather than a loaf. I could be wrong but the recipe seems similar.

Ends up like what they call "triple corn spoon bread" but firm enough that you can cut slices like regular corn bread.

Burgoo. Really popular here in Kentucky.
