Unfortunately, the pics don’t load in the order that they are chosen so they are a bit willy nilly, my apologies. STEP 2) FLEXIBILITY. As all of the CAMP items began to appear the Capt. approached me and we discussed it briefly where he again reminded me of flexibility being key. This is not what I pictured when I was helping to plan this hunting foray. Later, when we had something of a debriefing on our trip he mentioned something I will have to always keep in mind. If authenticity becomes the overwhelming objective then you may find yourself going on these outings by yourself because you’ve forgotten the primary objective (see Part 1). More advice from PARanger was that before the trip becomes a plan you may want to discuss what you would appreciate as guidelines to be followed on your trip at an event around the campfire using some libations to ease the corners of the topic. To quote the movie, “Field of Dreams”: build it and they will come. Being flexible allows room for people to develop organically and improve at their own pace. Someone pacing around and finding flaws in everything is a sure way to lower attendance for future trips. This leads to : STEP 3) LEAD FROM THE FRONT: If you’re desire is to put together the best experience then you have show how it’s done GENTLY (for the most part). Have a model camp, offer to help others with theirs. Present the most accurate image, talk about your clothes and accouterments (without being a braggart). Display an authentic and effective set of kit, tools and weapons. Maybe show how you pack and unpack your gear or prep yourself for a day in the field, just to compare notes (not be the “authority “) At the end of the trip the main objective was not only reached, later the Capt and I agreed but surpassed!! We had taken 17 squirrels in total for the camp. High score for the hunters was 8 by one of them. The last night we ate an incredible meal of squirrel and gravy complimented by hoe cakes made by the Capt that was absolutely DELICIOUS!!! A GREAT time was had by all and the tell tale evidence was that we would all do it again!! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! Many lessons were learned for me from planning, to how not to be too uptight in order to enjoy myself, to the best way to dress out a squirrel (if you don’t want to keep the hide. This Pilgrim is always learning and loving every minute of it.

Well written up. You raise many good points. I think there is a fine line between, "when authenticity becomes the overwhelming objective," and the expectation that a certain level of effort be made. There are many factors that can hold people back from a high level of authenticity, or HCness. Finance I am betting is one of the biggest ones, it certainly is for me. A growing, but not quite fully developed or committed level of interest can be another. As I gained information and more hc/pc gear, my interest grew, leading to more effort, leading to more and better stuff. (Still not as correct as I'd like) Sometimes age and physical limitations can be a good reason to cut some corners or sacrifice some correcness. But, if the effort is there, it should be recognized and commended.
It looks like a great time. What were temperatures like? Anything else happen interesting on the trip.

Nock, Thanks for the compliments! I'm happy that the point of this post is clear to you. One of the issues I see is that some folks reach a point in there acquisition of gear clothes and knowledge and put on the brakes to their development in this lifestyle. If you're looking to accurate I think that reach the goal that quickly or completely is rare. Also I have found that in life you will meet people that have limitations and people that are limited. One member of our hunt required a foam mattress because he had hurt his back at work. Yet he still showed up, was slapping pain plaster patches on his back and continued to hunt the entire trip. Ideally, if you are fortunate as I was, you will have a group who can develop together without the ridicule and much like a good meal shared by MEN, everyone brings something for the stew pot and you all share in the end product. I once read a book on turkey hunting in where the Author made the most valid point about instruction I ever heard, "In order to become a master turkey hunter, you have to WANT everyone you hunt with to become a Master Turkey hunter by helping them." The temps were divine!! Warm days with clear skys and nights that didn't drop below 45*, perfect for sleeping. Truly a Mark Baker, one blanket trip!! LOL As a hunting stories go there are many but the topper of them all was an in credible shot made by the Captain. We had treed a squirrel in a huge ponderosa pine, he was about 25-30 yards in the air. "All I can see are his ears...This is going to be the shot for the history book..." He fired, the squirrel scrambled even higher but to a more exposed position. I took a body shot although they are frowned upon over head shots and dropped the squirrel. As soon I picked it up I had to laugh as the Captain's ball had indeed found its mark!

Great post, I enjoyed it, looks like a great time. I agree with and am experiencing the "lead by example" part you spoke of, in our group I am probably the one that is interested the most in doing/being/wearing the most pc as I can afford, and have seen the interest increase in the others, thanks for sharing.

LenapeJ, Many thanks for the compliment!! From you that means a lot!! I must say, I was happy to see some interest in being more authentic, albeit reluctant, turn into action of their own choosing. Be patient and keep up the good work you do and before you know it you will be learning a new thing or two from them as well!! LOL

LenapeJ, Then you are truly on your way to finding the greatness in this Lifestyle!! I really believe that is the deeper meaning behind what we do. To me that is a reward that can only be achieved by passing the best of what you know onto others, especially people new to the Craft
